“Beauty does not take form from the parts of the body, but from the whole of our existence.“ - Dr. Pratima Raichur

Marma therapy

This holistic therapy works on the subtle energy points (marma’s) of our body to help us restore physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It’s a way to remove toxins, improve absorption of food and supports our digestive system. It works calming & clarifying on the mind and balancing on our emotions. As the prana, life energy, flows more freely our body functions are more efficiently and we feel more in touch with ourselves.

In this hour treatment certain body parts get gently pressed with the fingertips, so blockages can be removed. This holistic treatment supports our inner development, allowing us to slow down, fully surrender and releasing stress and anxieties. From here we may experience more calmness and peace. It stabilizes the nervous system and supports better sleep.

Unique treatment

In 2018-2019 I received this treatment method under the guidance of Lita Dash, former head of the Pancha Karma Center at Sri Sri Ayurveda in Bangalore and comes from a long family line of Ayurvedic doctors. She earned her Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.) from the University of Orissa, a degree recognized by India’s Ministry of AYUSH. Specializing in Pancha Karma, nutrition, and Marma Prana therapy and has over 20 years of clinical experience, making her a highly skilled practitioner of pulse diagnosis.

It’s a treatment method that is only learned by direct knowledge transmission, not via books or online available. It was an intense training of long days of Ayurvedic rituals, mantra reciting, teachings, disciplined learning and repetitive practice. Direct passing on of skills and knowledge. That’s why this treatment is unique of its kind and not found often.

I got to know Lita Dash as I was managing a yoga studio in Rotterdam where she came once per month to provide Ayurvedic treatments. Here we became friends and she invited me to become a Marma therapist under her guidance. Through her consultations I was successfully treaded for hormone and stomach disbalance. Part of the treatment was doing a 2 week Panca Karma treatment which I did in the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in Kerala, India.

Marma

The body is filled with energy channels called ‘Nadis’ and energy centers called ‘Marma’. These are points on the body that contain concentrated life force or ‘prana’. Prana is the vibrant electromagnetic energy of nature that moves through these energy channels. There are thousands of marmani, but 107 specific marma points are therapeutically used. It can be compared to a necklace, with the nadis being the string and the marma the pearls.

The word ‘Marma’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘mrung’ or ‘marane’. ‘marane’ means ‘death’, ‘mrung’ means ‘close to death’. Meaning that these points are crucial for our well being. If certain points are injured, hit or blocked, it can result in serious health problems.

Marma points can also become blocked and interrupt the flow of energy in the body. They can be seen as switches that allow the energy to flow when they are opened. When blocked it’s not possible for the prana to flow and certain parts will be depleted of energy. Removing blockages and opening these points is the purpose of marma treatment, so the energy can move freely again through the muscles, joints and organs. This results in more clarity, more energy, a deeper sense of feeling and being connected to oneself.

Ayurveda

Marma is a healing treatment from the traditional health science of India, called Ayurveda. The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges Ayurveda as the world’s oldest scientific and holistic health system. In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda means ‘the science of life’ (ayur means ‘long life’ or ‘life’ and veda means ‘science’ or ‘knowledge’).

The wisdom of Ayurveda was passed on orally until it was put down in writing more than 5000 years ago just like yoga and vedanta. The oldest known texts about Ayurveda are the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and the Ashtanga Hrudaya. The texts describe in detail the effects of the five elements in the cosmic system – earth, water, fire, air and ether – on our individual system and explain the need to keep these elements balanced for a healthy and happy life. The power of good health lies in this balance that is achieved through means and principles from nature.
